History

“We are as old as our spines.”

– Joseph Pilates.

Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement developed in 1920s onwards by Joseph Pilates (born in Germany, 1880– 1967). The central aim of the Pilates method is to create a mind-body approach to physical fitness, body awareness and most importantly moving towards having a stronger mind, body and spirit. Joseph Pilates applied specific principles to his exercise method, “Contrology” which are, precision, control, concentration, centering, fluidity and breathing. He believed these principles should be applied throughout a physical movement program to challenge the mind having complete control and awareness over the body.

Inspired by and studied ancient Greeks and Romans besides zen meditation, Joseph Pilates designed a series of more than 500 mind-body movements or exercises to develop strong, flexible muscles without adding bulk. An emphasis on breathing and torso strength ensured improved posture, reduced stress, and risk of injury.

Pilates is about connecting your mind, body and breathing to create a strong, well balanced body. It helps to improve muscle balance, endurance, flexibility, strength and coordination. Developing a strong “core”, “centre” or “power house” is important to perform the exercises both safely and effectively. Pilates also demands a great deal of mental focus throughout the workout, which leaves you with an amazing feeling at the end of your session.
